Q: Is there any medication for bipolar disorder that does not cause weight gain?

I have all the classic symptoms and family history for being bipolar but I have always been treated with antidepressants such as Prozac, Remeron, lexapro, and wellbutrin which only seem to make my symptoms worse. Have I not found the right mixture of medications? The wrong dosage?Or the wrong medication all together? So now I am not medicated at all and my life/marriage are being affected greatly. I NEED  to find a medication that works for bipolar disorder that will NOT make me gain weight. I already weigh 150lbs and am 5ft tall. HELP MY FAMILY PLEASE

Hi there!

Okay so let me ask...have you been officially diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder?  When you took these antidepressants...did they ever kick you into a manic episode?

There are medications which work well for some folk who have only depression and then there are medications which work well for some fok who have bipolar disoder and these meds may be different.  So the first thing you really have to figure out is if you have Bipolar Disorder or not.

What happened when you took these other medications?  Tell us more about why they didn't work for you...side effects?  You were still depressed?  What did your doctor say?

I wrote a post some time ago about weight gain and antidepressants that you may want to read.  Actually Wellbutrin in particular...was one where most people do not report any weight gain.

I am going to give you the link to our Bipolar site since you mentioned you felt you might be Bipolar.

First thing I would suggest is write down all the meds you have taken and what the issues were that made you stop taking them and also write down about your weight gain.  Next...go find a doctor who you trust.  Explain your situation and that you are wondering if you have just depression or if you may have Bipolar Disorder.  Then see what he or she recommends to you.

Know that I am not a doctor but my best guess is that your weight gain may not be entirely due to meds.  You are not on meds right now right?  So this is something else to discuss with the doctor of how to get the weight off.

I know this is a hard time...take things one step at a time.  Let us know what happens and thank you for reaching out here.
