Q: Have been on escitalopram for 3 years for anxiety and panic attacks. 2 months ago started to get the same symptoms coming back.Weaning off but feel awful. Can I go on something else?

Doctor said to wean off at 20mg one day and 10mg the next, have been doing this for 5 weeks, the first 2 weeks were ok, but now feel terrible, panicky, nausea, headaches, dizzy and depressed, wonder if doctor can put me on something else and is this normal.

Hi there

It seems like you are going about this the right way to do a slow and gradual taper but even when you taper slowly there unfortunately is the chance for withdrawal symptoms.

I suppose you have two choices here...one is to taper even more slowly than you are doing after discussing this option with your doctor.  The other choice, as you mention, is perhaps trying a new medication since you are still combatting depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.

Here is some information about the experience of taking Lexapro from our members that you may find useful.

You may also wish to look at what our other Member Medication Reviews to see how it might be to take another antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication.

This is a discussion you definitely need to have with your doctor.

Thank you for your question.
