Q: Is there a problem with stopping prozac after taking it for years?

Is there a problem with stopping prozac after taking it for years? I've been too tired (have MS) to pick up my prozac prescription for a couple of weeks.  I'm finding that maybe it isn't working so well after all.  I still struggling with the same blues.  I just don't want to start a downward spiral.  Anyone else have experience with stopping prozac?  I know should go see doctor but don't really have the energy right now. Thanks.

Hi Lily

It is usually a good idea to slowly taper off of an antidepressant but since you have already stopped taking Prozac for a couple of weeks this is no longer an option.  Did you find that it wasn't helping you?  Was that part of the reason you stopped taking it?

If you are still feeling depressed I would consider talking to your doctor to see if there are any other options.

In the meantime here is a web site which talks about possible withdrawal symptoms from going off of Prozac.  Generally I have heard that the withdrawal symptoms for Prozac are not so bad in comparison with other antidepressants.  On this particular web site they state that:

Certain Prozac withdrawal symptoms can include, but are not limited to:

I wanted to tell you too that...I am the Community Leader over on Health Central's MS site and please do stop by as there is a lot of support there.  I have MS too and I know how hard it can be to live with this disease.

Thank you for your question.

You should speak to your doctor about this. Only your doctor can make a change in your prescription. Maybe he/she can help with the energy issue as well.
