Q: I have recently been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and take Depakote. Is memory loss common?

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your question! I'm not aware of memory loss or inability to express oneself verbally as side effects of Depakote. You can read more about Depakote (including its side effects) by clicking here. Lack of coordination is a listed side effect, but that's about the closest side effect to what you're experiencing. If you're concerned that what you are experiencing is related to the Depakote, I would recommend speaking with your doctor. You definitely don't want to stop the medication without your doctor's okay, but he may recommend taht you stop it for a few days to see if the symptoms resolve. I hope this helps!

I love the depakote. It really keeps my mind running from running away. My mind one side tells me to eat the other side tells ne not too.. BUt with the depakote it slows down my mind. And I have lots of short term memorie loss. I am 44 years old.
