Q: Can the yellow dye in sertraline 100 mlg. cause an allergic reaction such as hives?

Been on Sertaline for 3 years. About 4 1/2 months ago, i received new prescription by mail order, only it was a different color, more yellow, no longer white. I called the pharmacy and they said it was just a different brand, the other brand had been white. Since i have been taking this yellow medication, i have been breaking out in hives everyday, have been to med dr. and dermetologist. So far they have not been able to locate the problem.  i was just recently told about someone who had the same symtoms, and in the long run was allergic to the dye in the medication.

Hi Teresa

I am thinking that this is totally possible.

On the MSN health site they give this warning:  "Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat."

I would contact your doctor immediately and ask what to do since there could be a correlation between your allergic symptoms and this version or the sertraline.

Thank you for your question...I hope everything works out in the end.

I would see if I could get the old prescription again and see if it goes away.
