Q: Can you have depression but still be happy a lot of the time...?

I think I might have depression, because I often feel this empty feeling where nothing will make me feel better, and for seemingly no reason. Almost every morning I struggle to get out of bed, even if there's something I am looking forward too. I try to think of things that will make me feel better, but I just don't want to do anything. But on the other hand, if I told anyone I knew that I was depressed I am sure they wouldn't believe me because when I actually do go out and be with other people I can be really happy and bubbly! I'm also usually really optimistic around my family at home. So what's the deal?

Hi, Sara.  Maybe you should talk to a psychologist about this.  A lot of people can act like they're happy when they're around other people and I don't think that's uncommon.  They find that the company of others can distract them from their pain.  Only you know how you really feel inside and if you're feeling that life is a struggle every day, it's possible that you could be depressed.  If you could even talk to your family doctor about this, you might get an opinion about it and maybe a referral to a psychologist - so talking to a psychologist to start with wouldn't be the worst thing you could do.
