Q: Is there a link between depression and hormones balancing after stopping breastfeeding.

My daughter is 15 months and I stopped nursing her about a month ago. My mood has been up and down since then and I wondered if there was a link as my body gets back fully to its pre-pregnancy state.

Hi there

I don't have any official research to show you on this but I can tell you from personal experience that I had experienced some depression after I stopped breastfeeding my sons.  It just seems natural that as your body's hormones adjust to this change...you might feel a little moody.

If you feel you are consistently depressed then it may be time to consult with your doctor about what you can do.

In the meantime here is some information given by the National Women's Health Information Center regarding depression after childbirth.

Hang in there....and thank you for your question.
