Q: My husband will go over a month without showering.

We stopped relations after our son was born. He has his hobbies and spends most of his free time with them. He has major social anxiety and doesn't like family get togethers. We have normal conversations but he's very set in his ways. I'm really concerned about his hygiene. He'll only shower before having to go somewhere: the doctor or a social event.

Hey Jen

I am just going to throw this out there.  I could very well be absolutely off base here but could your husband be on the autism spectrum by chance?  Some of what you are saying sounds familiar for folk who have Asperger syndrome.  Does your husband have a diagnosis?  Does he also suffer from depression?

I am not a doctor nor a therapist.  I can totally see where you would be concerned over his hygeine.  Would he see someone for some counseling?  Have you told him that you were a little worried about his lack of bathing?  I would open up the dialogue of telling him your concerns and see what he says.  He might be unaware that it bothers you.

I wish you the best of luck.  Please come back to tell us how things go.  And thank you for your question.

I am not a professional just a women of 53 who has lived with depression since my teens. I have many family members with it also. My experience has been, that depression can absolutely, cause a person to not shower .
