How to be less anxious before going to a outpatient program. Mornings are difficult

Hope
10/28/09

Hi I have just started a ten day out patient program at a local hospital. It has been good for me because I get out and meet new people.Groups meet all day long and talk about issues. My problem I get very anxious in the morning before the group starts. The group goes from 9am-3pm.Has anybody been involved with a outpatient program and experienced this? I would like to be less anxious in the morning if possible.I feel this is a big step for me.I even was able to tell my mother about this program who is usually negative about new things.I am 46 and this is the first time I have told her much about my personal life.To my surprise she has been positive about it.They teach relaxiation in this group so I can use that. But maybe it is normal to feel anxious for anyone to speak in front of a group of new people? I am ok once I get there but caught myself trying to get out of going a few times.I feel this could be a new start for me.Any suggestions on making things easier? THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP

Hi again, Hope.  I have this same difficulty when I am in groups and sometimes the anxiety has lasted the entire time.  I do think anxiety is normal, particularly if you're introverted or you fear talking about your issues, maybe feeling shame about them.  At least you feel better once you're there.  Maybe you could just tell yourself each morning that, yes, you are anxious but it is only temporary and the benefits will be worth it.  Probably everyone else in the group is anxious, too, so I don't think you're the only one.

Hope it goes well for you - let us know!
