Q: Cancer treatment and depression

I am currently going through radiation treatments for prostate cancer. I am usually a happy go luck guy. The last two days I can't seem to have any energy and will sometimes get emotional and begin to cry. This totally unlike me. Will it pass or should I talk to my Doctor?

I would definitely talk to your doctor. It doesn't mean that you need treatment, but that seems like a very sudden dip in to depression, and your doctor should know.

Your situation is very tough, and depression would not be a big surprise. This may be some sort of side effect the radiation, or it may be a normal reponse to having cancer.

Hey there Richard

I agree with the first commenter that you definitely should talk to your doctor.  You are not alone in this...in doing a bit of research...it seems that radiation therapy definitely can cause depression and for the reason that you have stated...you are low in energy.

Here is a wonderful article I found about depression and radiation therapy and what to do about it.  The author does state that:  "Since radiation zaps our energy for some months to follow treatment, it would be normal to be depressed when the radiation energy drop hits. The good side of this is that we should start to feel better emotionally when we start to get our energy back."

It does sound promising that you will feel better emotionally once your energy returns.  In the meantime, perhaps your doctor can give you something to combat the dperession.

I am sorry you are having to go through all of this.  Please come back to the site to tell us how things go for you.
