Hi; I have a real problem with morning depression on waking: tried taking 50mg of Pristiq at  night;no change; taking 100mg for about 3months now; added 150 Wellbutrin 2weeks ago; getting very tired of this; have taken Prozac 14 yrs;did great; wore off; effexor xr lasted 3 years; cymbalta caused anxiety; and reved up feelings; now trying this combo. Took 9 weeks plus to even help; now do not know what to do about this problem. Any suggestions? Do not feel like myself anymore dealing with this problem every morning for 2-3 hours. Anyone??  Thank You; Sandy

Hi, Sandy,

Wow, this sounds familiar. I had this problem for a while. Luckily, my Migraine specialist is also certified in psychiatry, and he found my problem. My problem was that my sleep quality was poor. Once we dealt with that, and I was getting good quality sleep, the morning depression dissipated, and my regular antidepressant was back to controlling depression for me very well.

I hadn't realized my sleep was messed up, but a few questions from my doctor showed that there were problems.

This may not be what's causing your problem, but it would be worth discussing with your doctor.

Keep us posted, please?

Good luck,

Teri

Sure, Sandy!

  • Was I going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, including weekends and holidays?
  • What time?
  • Did I feel rested and refreshed when I got up in the morning?
  • Did I get sleepy in the afternoon?
  • Did I get sleepy reading or watching television?

As I said, I'm probably very lucky that I see the same doctor for Migraines and depression. Messed up sleep is a huge Migraine trigger, so my doctor always takes a good look at sleep. I was already taking medication for a sleep disorder that kept me from sleeping well. We needed to change it.

Hoping this helps,

Teri

Teri; Our hospital has a sleep disorder lab; I am wondering if I should be tested; I wake up a couple of times at night and check the time; also family has said I snore. Also; I cannot take a nap when I am tired because I wake up depressed and lonely even with people in the house with me.I do keep the same times of going and getting up but 2-3 hours are lost on not wanting to do anything productive and I used to get up at 530 and be happy. Maybe you are on to something.  one quick feedback and I will leave you alone. Thank you soooo much; Sandy

Hey Terri, I think my sleep is messed up too and maybe that's whats causing awful morning depression (and also after waking up from naps).  How did you get your sleep situation fixed?  I've tried all kinds of sleep meds, they don't work all that well for me.  What have you tried?

I have been on wellbutrin for many years and the last few months it didn't seem to help. I am in the process of changing over to Zoloft, geadually. I also take 1/2 mg of xanax as needed. The most i take  it 1/2 mg three times a day. I have an insomnia problem and hope this new med helps. I to feel worse in the morning and as the day goes on,I feel better. I had never heard of Pristig. I did look it up now and see its for major depression.Keep in touch and let me know how the wellbutrin goes. Some do very well on it,but it takes time to help.

I wake up with that feeling a lot and thats common with depression, but I am hoping when I get the zoloft increased that it will help that. I take a xanax 1/2 mg in the morning and that helps anxiety and relaxes me somewhat. I will be of wellbutrin in two weeks as my doctor has gradually decreased my dosage as zoloft is increased. Hoping this med will help. Just want to feel good again as I know you do to.

ok; thank you for your info; I hope you do well on the zoloft. Anxiety is not a major problem for me; mostly the depression; morning is the worst as I said. Keep in touch!!

Yeah, it means you're not responding to antidepressants, in other words, you still have depression.  Try Transcranial Magnetic Therapy.  That's the latest and greatest non medication treatment for depression.

If that doesn't work try ECT.  Don't be afraid of ECT.  It's the most effective treatment for depression.  It's not scary like you see in the movies.  If you lose a few memories so what.  You'll feel a lot better.  And you may not lose any memories - some people don't.  My friend had 10 ECT treatments and he still remembers chemistry and math equations from high school and he's now 52 years old.  Don't pay attention to the scary stories you read on the internet about it.  Lots of my friends at my depression group had it a lot of times and they said it worked.

But, definitely try Transcranial Magnetic Therapy first -- no memory problems from that at all.

I'm having the exact same problem as you.  I am trying to get my insurance company to approve the Transcranial Therapy (it's quite expensive), if they don't approve it I'm going for the ECT.  Can't stand the depression anymore.  You're right, it makes me feel like "not myself" like you said.
