Q: has anyone taken xanax for sleep for a long time? how many mgs and for how long now?

i'm 35 yrs old  and have trouble sleeping since i can remember.  xanax 5 mg works really good for me once at night.  i feel very happy in the morning.  people always talk about getting hooked.  i've been taking it on and off for 3 yrs and i'm ok. just jittery by 7 p.m if i dont take it. but that about it. i'd like to take it for the rest of my life.  i have not increased the dosage or anything.

Hi Jen

Well we just talked about Xanax here recently on our Member Medication Review.  Come check it out!  I just started to try Xanax for anxiety and I haven't taken many pills so I can't tell you about any long term effects.  Some people do feel it is addictive.  I guess I would ask your doctor about any dangers of taking this long term for sleep...of course the risk is that after awhile it might not work but if you have been taking it for three years and it stills works...well I guess that is good.  Would you be able to sleep without it?

Consult with your doctor about your concerns.  And please talk about your experience with this medication on our medication member review.  That way we have all our member experience information in one place.
