As Judy says, this is not a diagnosis - there's nothing by that name in the authoritative manual on mood disorders, including depression. But a strong mental trait of pessimistic outlook on life is, in itself, thought to be a cause of depression by cognitive therapy researchers like Martin Seligman. His book, Learned Optimism, explains that pessimistic habits of thinking can be changed by learning new habits that are more optimistic in assessing life situations. His theory is that by learning to think more positively, you can end depression. That concept has led to "positive psychology" and there are several books about this, such as Seligman's Authentic Happiness and many others.
So cognitive psychotherapy of the positive thinking variety would be the recommended strategy for dealing with depression. Not everyone accepts that view of depression and its cause, but that's one form of help you could explore.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of this - was this a diagnosis you received from a mental health professional? I'm guessing it might be the equivalent of dysthymia, which is chronic low-grade depression. Sometimes medication can help this but I think it usually takes psychotherapy to change thinking patterns that can trigger it. There's no way to say if it can be "cured" and no way to know how long it would take. I think it's probably a matter of changing your belief system about yourself and challenging the validity of it. Sorry I don't have an easy answer for you. For many of us on this site, managing depression in some form or other has been nearly a life-long activity.
HI,
FIRST OF ALL THIS IS A WAY OF THINKING, AND ONE MUST REALLY WORK SO VERY HARD AT CHANGING THEIR THINKING.
I USED TO TELL PEOPLE THAT 8 TRACKS WERE WAY OF STYLE, AND THAT NOE WE HAD TO REPLACE THEM ALL WITH CD'S. ONE ALSO HAS TO REMEMBER THST THE STUFF WE HESR IN OUR HEADS THAT IS SO NEGSTIVE CAME FROM SOMEWHERE! IT DIDN'T JUST GET THERE BY ITSELF! LEARNING WHERE WE GOT THOSE MESSAGES IS VERY IMPORTANT TOO!
ONCE I STARTED FINDING THIS OUT, I STARTED GIVING THEM BACK TO THAT PERSON SO TO SPEAK. IT SURE WASN'T EASY, AND I STILL HAVE TO WORK ON IT TODAY.
IS THERE A CURE FOR IT, SURE THERE IS. MEDICATION IS ONLY A BANDADGE FOR WHILE WE WORK ON THE ISSUES WE NEED TO UNTIL WE GET ALL THE GARBAGE OUT. AFTER ALL "DEPRESSION IS ANGER TURNED INWARD, AND HOMICIDE IS ANGER TURNED OUTWARD"
hOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? THAT ALL DEPENDS ON THE PERSON, WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM WHEN THEY WERE A CHILD, OR I SHOULD SAY ALL THOSE REAL INFORATIVE YEARS. ALSO THIGS THAT DAMAGE A CHILD FOR LIFE, AND IN
IF NOT TREATD WHEN A CHILD TO SO UCH DAMAGE THAT AS AN ADULT WE JUST KEEP IT INSIDE OF US, AND END UP LIKE WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT NOW.
