Doctor wants my father who is 93 to start taking seroquel.
My father, who is 93, is hearing noises, like singing and people talking in his head at times. The doctor wants him to start taking seroquel, but when I read all the side effects, I am scared of this drug for him.
Hi, there. Both my son and I have taken Seroquel. The worst side effect for me was extreme sleepiness, I could barely function and my son was kind of apathetic from it, yet many people take it and it helps them. I was hearing things, too, but I'm not so sure it wasn't a paranormal phenomenon, rather than something psychotic. I would just watch him carefully and see how it affects him, maybe it will be fine. And if it isn't, you can call his doctor right away and report whatever is going on. How is your father mentally, otherwise? I'm sure it's a worry, but try not to unless you see something weird going on with him or he can't function with it. I wish you the best.

I don't blame you, then, for being wary of this drug. Can you talk to his doctor about your concerns? I can't see where Seroquel would help dementia, anyway, it's more for auditory hallucinations, I think. Maybe you should get a second opinion - I wonder why his doctor wouldn't be aware of the risks. Well, hope it all works out okay for you and your dad. It's good you researched it.

I think my father is in the early stages of dementia, which is another reason I don't know if he should take Seroquel because it said on the sheet that came with the pills that it may increase the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in elderly patients.
