I'd urge you to check out the schizophrenia site here at Health Central to get a better answer. Also look at the National Institute of Mental Health site for authoritative information. From my reading, as a lay person, it looks like research is very active on genes associated with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses but isn't saying you're born with the illness in an active state. You're born with the genes that may lead to schizophrenia later in life, but the latest I've read on that indicates the relationship is much more complicated than anyone thought. It's not a matter of a few genes but apparently involves a great many. So there's no definitive answer yet on the genetic inheritance.
But please check the real authorities at the sites above.
