Hi - my name is adrian .. i have had depression probably all my adult life , but was actually diagnosed 18 yrs ago ... i tried doing myself in after a very traumatic incident and just felt like i did not want to be here anymore ...
after going into a hospital and learning to cope , i did okay for years .. then 7 years ago more trauma .. death of a loved one, learning that i had ms and two or three other issues overcame my mind ... and once again i spiraled down ..
i had been "clean and sober" for 12 years ! then i was pretty much forced to have to take meds ... i am sorry that you feel alone in your thoughts about this drug issue ...
you are NOT .. i generally post on the chronic pain or ms portion here .. but this came to me today and i had to respond as i also feel worse off from meds .. just do not know what my alternatives are anymore ...
i recently quit smoking, took chantix, and it made me near suicidal .. also was prescribed just a month earlier BY an EXPERT on ms for neurontin .. an anti seizure med , and was at the brink of pulling my head off ...
i get angry when i am given something to "help" and I ask the question EVERY TIME ... how will this work with what i am taking now ... and get a generalized statement ...
docs and pharmacists are taught by the drug companies to CYA .. and so we , as i have been writing for years, are the guinea pigs .. and the FDA allows it ..
drug lobbyists ARE the major cause of this epidemic .. they have the cures , but will not allow them out as it would put them out of business ..
if you are an asthmatic (?) and prescibed something to help you with your asthma , then read or hear the warnings , that this particular drug can cause asthma DEATH , why on earth is it out there ?
this is not uncommon, bextra , vioxx , celebrex .. to name a few .. now more and more these drugs are not good for us ..
my suggestion is as little as possible, good therapy as often as needed and believe in yourself more .. so what if you cry or are blue every now and then .. don't add or change your regimen , cause people like us who have depression want to be happy , so do people in chronic pain , or who have cancer .. so take the minimum you can , take the old tried and true ..
i am sorry , but the more we add , the more suicidal we become and it is not funny, it is not pathetic, it is real .. it ruins relationships , it takes what hope you have and so get angry .. but not at yourself .. i wish i could tell you how or what to really do , but i can't ...
i can only say I HEAR YOU .. agserra

GET A NEW DOCTOR! STAND UP FOR YOURSELF. THIS IS RIDULOUS! uNLESS THE REST OF OUR QUESTION GOT CUT OFF, AND i'M MISUNDERSTANDING (i AM NEW TO THIS) ---- YOU CALL AND DOCTOR OR HAVE SOMEONE ELSE CALL AND/OR GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IF SUICIDAL...ASAP. AND ONCE THERE, DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER IF YOU ARE SUICIDAL. YOU SHOULD BE TREATED, POSSIBLY ADMITTED ASAP. Also, if you are getting appropriate treatment for depression, you usually would not take that long to determine what works. It is frustrating to say the least, but you have an illness that needs medical treatment the same way alzeimers or parkinsons does. Any medical professional who does not recognize this as a brain illness is unqualifies to treat you. You can't get the immediate help you need sitting and typing on a website. You are worth standing up with all the energy you can muster, and calling someone to say "I AM NOT GIVING UP." Please help me find the best help I can get. There are people out there. Look in your phone book under crisis intervention type things, mental health organizations in the front of the book....general community listings: call your state representative.(why? ask is there a consumer advocate office in your state for mental illness, etc. If they don't know, usually they can find out. Look online, under your state website, Dept of Health....I know this is alot of calls, but my guess is you will feel lbetter if you even get one good phone call accomplished...I'm just suggesting doing one of these...or all. I mean, do SOMETHING. YOu might be able to tell I have been at this for a long time....I have been able to make the calls...but if you can't...try to find someone to pick up the receiver for you and sit with them while they get the ball rolling...it is a pain in the neck, but its what you have to do: self advocate. Nicely.
YOU SHOULD CONTACT PERHAPS A LOCAL AFFILIATE OF NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, who may put you in touch with crisis workers or advocates who can help you make these calls....at the very least, look for a better doctor. Before spilling my life and complaints to any new doctor, I would look for someone relatively young, as the research is moving fast and furious, so more recent grads, in my view, offer SOME advantage. If you don't have anyone local to ask who would be a good doctor, see if a NaMI support group, NAMI education group or DBSAlliance support group is near you. If you could go, you will be able to ask the others: who is considered "good" around here....maybe get decent referral. Good Luck.

Hi Watsthematterwithme,
I know you are going through an extremely difficult time right now, but you do not have to go through your pain alone. Please find someone to talk to right away: a family member, a friend, a therapist, a member of your church or a doctor. Talking about your suicidal thoughts will help you feel less overwhelmed.
Health Central is a great forum for finding information to help you ask all the right questions and for sharing what works for you and learning what others are doing in similar situations. But this forum can not be a substitute for your doctor's sound medical advice. If your doctor is giving you advice that you think is incorrect, or you are not getting a good response regarding the medicine, then it is time for another doctor.
THCN is not a crisis hotline and does not provide medical advice, but there are people and resources out there that can help you get through this.
Hotline counselors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They will listen to you without judgment [we can’t vouch for the confidentiality of these hotlines] and can talk with you about everything you’re going through.
- The Boys and Girls Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000
- 1-800-273-TALK
- 1-800-SUICIDE
If you would like the help of a professional immediately, you can call 911, take yourself to the nearest emergency room, or Find a Therapist.
Support groups exist in many communities to help you get through this. Try these organizations:
- NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
- DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance)
- Befrienders Worldwide
- PsychCentral Support Groups
I hope you will reach out to someone close to you, but please stay in touch here too and let us know how you are doing. There are many people online here who walk the same walk as you. If you are having a rough day, login and tell us about it. Perhaps someone has some advice that will help. Likewise if you are having a good day, then let us know about that as well. Could be someone out there is having similar issues and the act of sharing your story helps them.
Take care and let me know how you are doing. Email me through this site.
