Q: Is shutdown, paranoia, memory loss, turning love to fear/hate personality disorder or depression?

Total mental breakdown, immediate ending of relationship, total loss of memory of who I was, what our relationship was, love transformed into utter fear, paranoia, despising.   Breakdown took place 14 months ago (woke up and didn't know who I was ... 2 weeks later ended relationship with myriad of reasons all adding up to accusation that I was trying to "subordinate" him to my will).  By Christmas last year could barely remember anything about life with me - we had planned to spend our lives together.  In July sent a cold ruthless email ordering me to never contact him again.  Completely broken hearted by it all and without any comprehension. No answers in my head or heart.  Symptoms of acute depression (continued working, retreated to routine, ordered life of work, life with daughters and father) or symptoms of personality disorder?

Hi, K.  I'm not a doctor, but there is definitely something going on with him.  It could be depression, with maybe even a psychotic break since he's had memory loss and paranoia.  I don't think personality disorders just pop up like that.  The other thing I was thinking is that there might be something neurologically wrong with him, like a tumor or something.  Sudden changes in behavior like that would be a signal that something has happened, either physically or emotionally.  It must be hard to deal with this, especially when it happened so suddenly.  Maybe someone else might have some ideas, but probably only a doctor would be able to figure out exactly what's going on.  I wish you all the best, hope you get an answer some day.
