I am 33 and 6 1/2 weeks pregnant I am taking 75mg effexor XR . Does anyone know of any studies that have been done to find out if it is safe while pregnant. Has anyone taken effexor while pregnant and given birth to healthy babies.

Hi Lynette,
There have not been many studies of SSRI drugs in pregnancy. But here is one discussing Safety of Newer Antidepressants in Pregnancy.
Effexor has a pregnancy Category C rating, meaning that it could potentially harm the unborn baby. Here is a discussion of concerns in the Third Trimester.
And here is where a nurse answers a similar question and mentions that babies exposed to Effexor during later stages of the pregnancy may suffer withdrawal symptoms after delivery. She also mentions a medication which can be used during pregnancy to lessen withdrawal symptoms during a tapering down of Effexor.
But the best way to get an answer specific to you is to ask your doctor.
