Q: Anyone had luck with ECT?

I had 19 ECT treatments in 1996 for treatment-resistant depression. It was my experience that they did more harm than good because my memories of how to do math are all gone. I had a good job as an accountant at the time, so I had to dump that. And still, I cannot do math problems on paper or in my head. For a time, I couldn't even figure out how to use a calculator. And to top it all off, the depression was still there. Yes, I did agree to have ECT, even though I couldn't remember doing so afterwards. Yes, they showed me a short film about what would be done and how, which I don't remember. And I do understand some recent memories may not return after ECT, like things that happened that day or a day or two before. But math? How bizarre! Recently when I told my psychiatrist I was beginning to feel depression seeping in around the edges of my consciousness again, he suggested going back to ECT. I told him I would not consider it, nor would my family allow me to consider it, unless I was acutely suicidal and there really was no other choice. (Although, of course, the choice is mine alone.) Are there others here who have had success with ECT? I would like to know how many sessions/boosters it took for the depression to subside and whether it was a slow process of recovery or a quick one. I know it helps some people because I talked to a man who was having them at the same time I was, and he said he felt it gave him his life back.

Hi Donna

It really is a mixed bag as far as how different people respond to ECT and how they feel about it.  There are posts by members on ECT experiences such as this one for you to read.

I did an interview with a "Doctor Shock" you may want to read...where many members commented about their experiences.

I am glad you are writing about your experience...it seems no treatment is without side effects.  I am sorry it affected you in this way.

My mother had it back in the fifties and...it affected her memory too.

Thank you for your question.

Oh man, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! I wish I could have got to you before this.  Do not trust the doctors when they say there are no side effects.  LMAO!

My sister had about 17 treatments around the same time in 1996 when my daughter was born.  It is now 2010.  She still has memory lapses and complete blackouts with her memory.  Now, they swore this was not a side effect.  LIARS!  I read all her info. before the ECTS.  She was put under anesthesia 17 times and you 19.  Anyone I knew it erased so many memories.  This is for people who have had a son murdered and they pace until they where the carpet out or their pants fall off while pacing.  This happened to my girlfriends mother.  I am so sick of saying remember the time..... Oh, I don't remember that!  I am sick of it.  You think ECT bothers the  patient try being a family member to an ECT patient and you are looking at a shell of a human being.  Please do not try a lobotomy next.  They don't work either.  Like it is almost the same thing just a little less invasive.  Read Carrie Fischer's Wishful Drinking about her ECT treatment too.  Good Luck!  Wish I caught you earlier.  Oh and Doctors can be hazardous to your health.  I know, I see all kinds, from Psych docs to Rheumy's to GP's to pulmonary.  I hate that profession.  These people are mostly incompetent and could give a hoot less about you but your money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been having successful ECT treatments and am hoping to continue them on a maintenance basis for now.  I started treatments 3 x a week at the end of October to treat my stubborn depressions that are part of my experience with bipolar disorder.  I too have unsuccessfully tried just about every medication combination out there...even the Ensam patch which is not well known as an antidepressant.  After 4 unilateral had not done much yet I agreed to switch to bilateral.  The memory loss and cognitive blankness at times began to randomly show up on some days at that point.  There are isolated days I have no memory of and some days I was perfectly fine.  So it was unpredictable.  But I am grateful the depression symptoms were alleviated at that point and I have been basically free of depression.  I've had to be very careful to keep my sleep on track and regular, however, because when it's thrown off and I get overtired I do feel some of the depression seeping in.  Then I am fine again once I'm rested.  I've had some slight hypomania at times during these past weeks of wellness, but it's been very manageable and short-lived.  I am basically feeling better and am more active and more able to function than I have been in many months.  My depressions have been very stubborn prior to the ECT.  So maybe ECT is something I need to keep up for now since no meds have been really effective.  I am still taking 250 mg of Lamictal and 200 mg of Seroquel at bedtime.  The plan for the ECT is to continue once a week treatments until after the holidays when I'll just have once a month maintenance treatments for possibly 4 or 5 months.  So far I've had 9 treatments at the 3 x a week spacing, then 3 at the once a week spacing that were unilateral due to the need to reduce memory loss effects.  Unilateral has been easier to tolerate.  I plan to continue the maintenance schedule with unilateral treatments.  I'm doing better tolerating the side effects and am so relieved to be free of depression for the holidays.  I don't really feel totally comfortable with the idea of ECT.  There is such a stigma that I have not told many people about it.  It's too bad there is such a stigma and that it has been so negative for some people.  For me it may be the answer to alleviating the oppressive depressions that come up frequently and unexpectedly with no pattern or apparent environmental cause.  I expect another depressive episode will start to settle on me at some point in the near future.  Thanks for your sharing your experience with ECT.  It helps to hear from others who have experienced the strange phenomenon of ECT's side effects.
