Q: Post partum depression, what drug is best to treat this?

What anti depressant is best for post partum depression? I was prescribed Prozac. How long does it take to work? I haven't felt any different and it's been 2 weeks since I started Prozac 20mg.

Anti depressants are often prescribed to treat postpartum depression.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/postpartum-depression/DS00546/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs

Here is a good resource.

Usually give antidepressants 2 to 3 weeks to work. I would check back with your doctor if your feeling nothing in 2 weeks time.

Good luck,

Pat

prozac is d only drug available in d market which is the most effective antidepressant. U shouldve felt a slight lifting of the fog in two weeks. unfortunately u havent. I m soory for that. Try taking 40mg for a week n still if u dont find any difference increase it to 60mg. This is how I overcame my suffering. meanwhile try some relaxation techniques like light YOGA,MEDITATION,WALKING. it helps u. finally wishing u a soon recovery.

Hi momof 3girls,

I am a mother myself.  I also suffered from post partum depression.

This was about 25 yrs. ago.  Then there was no prozac.  I took an

older medication.  It took a good month to start working.

I have also been on prozac.   It took about 3 -4 weeks to feel

better.

I also suffered from anxiety.  The older med. seemed to work better

for both of the symtoms.

Good Luck,

SSRI's can take up to 6-8 weeks to be fully effective.  Common practice is for doctors to wait 8 weeks before making a change.  While you may need an increased dosage please do not make this change on your own.  Aerobic activity is also shown to have anti-depressant benefit (varying research says in as short as 10 days if done daily for 30 minutes).  As appu suggests yoga and meditation can be helpful.  I know in Central Florida you can even find "mommy and me" yoga classes.  And don't rule out seeing a therapist.  Research also shows that for depression a combination of meds and talk therapy is the best combination.  Good luck to you.

You may need a higher dose. I am on Prozac right now, but mine is not post partum since my baby is 9 months old. I had depression before her, but it got really bad after I had her. They started me on Effexor which seemed to work really fast and was good....for a while. Then it turned into a nightmare. I would suggest if you want to try it because it could work faster for you, but I would not recommend staying on this drug long. I had to get switched after 8 months it was driving me down worse.
