Q: Newlywed living with depression

I have been married for 10 months and I am living with depression.  I have been taking Lexapro 10mg for 5 months and it made me feel great.  The only thing is that it decreased my sex drive.  About 3 weeks ago, I started taking Budeprion xl 300mg.  For a while (about a week or two) I thought my sex drive was back but now I'm experiencing insomnia, dizziness and I don't feel so great.  Every time I feel dizzy or can't sleep I am constantly reminded of my condition.  I have called my Dr. who told me to reduce my dosage to 150mg to see if that reduces or stops the dizziness.  I am between a rock and a hard place because I don't know what to do...feel great but have no sex drive (Lexapro) or feel dizzy, tired and depressed therefore resulting in no sex (Budeprion).  Any positive or encouraging thoughts?

Hello C,

How long ago did you reduce the Budeprion dosage? Both insomnia and dizziness are common potential side effects of of this medication, but they sometimes stop as your bodie gets used to the medication.

None of us likes being reminded of depression or any other condition. I hate being reminded that I have diabetes and heart disease, but I'm reminded of them every time I plan a meal. Sometimes, we have to accept that we have a disease, the decide we're going to live our lives as well as we can, despite that disease. In a way, we've been dealt a lousy hand, but at least there are treatments available. Right?

Keep your chin up, and keep working with your doctor. Your patience and determination will pay off.

Here is an article by Merely Me about antidepressants and losing your libido. One of the things which need adjustment, beside our depression, is the amount of medication, or the type, to find as optimal a place as we can. Since you are taking the medication with the least reported effect on the libido, maybe adjusting the dosage and/or frequency will work.

I hope others here can help with ideas, depression alone often plays havoc with our enjoyment of life. Let us know how you are soon.

It is possible that you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the lexapro. Keep your doc informed.

Just a thought,
