Hello, Nagraj. Do you know what your brother's actual diagnosis is? I'm not sure what you mean by his being able to do his work cleanly. Is he in school and is he in special education? It sounds like he has a developmental disability (although there could be some other things, like autism, going on that we don't know about) and I'm afraid there's no cure for that, but that doesn't mean he can't have a good life. I have a 32-year-old son with a developmental disability and autism both. He got a lot of help during his school years, as well as training in some job skills and socialization and today he has a full-time job making a good salary. He is skilled in some things and not very good at some others.
What's important is that your brother be allowed to learn as much as he can and do as much as he wants to do that won't harm himself or others and that he knows his family loves him and makes him feel secure. He will probably always be like a child in some respects and in some other ways, he'll surprise you and be a little more grown up. Have your parents talked to you about what his disabilities and abilities are? The more you know about what to expect, the more helpful you can be.
I hope I've been at least a little bit helpful, but let me know if you have any other questions or if you just want to talk.
Hi Nagraj,
I think it depends on his diagnosis. What kind of mental illness and etc. If it is not a permanent one, then maybe therapy can help, but if this is permanent like autism or some mental illness, then there is no cure. You can train him to get adapted and etc. but he will never think like a 22 year old if it is permanent. This does not mean you cannot try to rehabilitate him so that he can get adapted to the real world as a 10 years old. i.e., he has a limit but he is not a baby either.
I am sorry that he is mental challenged. I would think if it is due to physcial handicaps that are not known such as being hard of hearing or having poor sight and that kind of thing, then the mental problem can be changed. Usually if one removes or fixes/adpats this physical problem, the mental problem can be improved.
However if he has autism and some retarded condition, there is no cure. But there is therapy to improve his quality of life.
Hope this helps,
NC
