Study examines link between ADHD meds, drug abuse

A second study has shown that taking stimulant medications for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder does not increase a child's risk of abusing drugs as a teen-ager. Researchers found that boys who began taking Ritalin at 6 or 7 had the same rate of drug abuse as young adults as a group of young men who did not have ADHD and did not take Ritalin. Boys who started taking Ritalin at ages 8 through 12 did have a higher rate of future drug abuse, the study found. Read more »
