Researchers at The Forsyth Institute have found that Prozac (fluoxetine) may block bone loss caused by inflammation as well as stimulate new bone formation. Scientists gave the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant to mice and found that the overall bone mass in the animals' vertebrae and femurs increased after taking the drug. Bone destruction is linked to several chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and gum disease.
