Researchers say that an older anesthesia drug has shown surprising success in treating severe depression. Scientists gave ketamine to a small group of 17 severely depressed patients to study the drug's effect on receptors in the brain. The researchers were surprised when 12 of the 17 patients reported 'profound relief' from their depression within hours of receiving the ketamine dose.
