A reader who takes Coumadin asks Joe and Teresa Graedon of The People's Pharmacy if it's safe to take the over-the-counter med Pepto-Bismol with the drug. The Graedons respond that Pepto-Bismol can cause problems in Coumadin users because it contains the aspirin-like drug salicylate. The Graedons also give information on other OTC remedies that can affect Coumadin users, including topical arthritis treatments such as Bengay, Icy Hot Cream, and Thera-Gesic cream.
