Agricultural scientists have developed a type of oat that offers 50 percent more beta-glucan than normal oats. Studies have shown that consuming the soluble fiber beta-glucan (http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/oat_0323.shtml) can lower cholesterol and improve heart health. The researchers say this is the first "cultivar," or seed that can be consistently grown with the same traits.
