The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Pristiq for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. Pristiq is drugmaker Wyeth's successor to Effexor XR, but unlike Effexor, Pristiq can be taken at a therapeutic dose immediately. Most antidepressants require patients to start at a lower dose and then gradually increase to the desired dose.
