Nicotine may spur pre-diabetes

Nicotine may increase smokers' risk of developing pre-diabetes, experts say. In an animal study, researchers found that nicotine increased cortisol levels in the blood and encouraged insulin resistance, even though the mice ate less and actually lost weight. Scientists say treating the animals with the nicotine-agonist drug mecamylamine blocked the process somewhat, but they say smokers should still be aware of the heightened risk of pre-diabetes caused by nicotine.
