Drugmakers to report fees to doctors

Two drug companies--Eli Lilly and Merck--have announced that they will begin disclosing their payments to doctors who have offered consulting service. This move comes in response to public outcry, including from members of Congress, who say that patients have the right to know how closely their doctors are tied to pharmaceutical companies. Experts claim that financial ties with drugmakers may sway a doctor's prescribing habits or bias their interpretation of study results. Both Eli Lilly and Merck will begin disclosing this information in 2009.
