A simple checklist makes surgery safer, study finds

New research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that a simple checklist for surgical teams can significantly the number of surgical complications and deaths. The 19-item checklist includes such basic steps as having the doctors and nurses introduce themselves, ensuring that adequate blood is on hand, and making certain that all equipment needed is present. In a recent study, surgical teams at eight hospitals adopted checklist. After one year, researchers found that the average patient death rate fell more than 40 percent and the rate of complications fell by about a third.
