FDA issues warning about skin-numbing drugs
(HealthDay News) UPDATED 2009-01-16
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to healthcare providers and consumers about serious and life-threatening risks associated with improper use of prescription and over-the-counter topical anesthetics. These skin-numbing products in cremes, ointments, or gels contain anesthetic drugs such as lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine, and prilocaine. These medications are used to desensitize nerve endings near the skin's surface to help ease pain and itching. According the FDA, if used improperly, the drugs can be absorbed into the bloodstream and cause reactions such as irregular heartbeat, seizures, breathing difficulties, coma, or even death. The FDA cautioned against using these topical meds over a large area of skin, on broken skin, or with heat. Official also suggest that women planning to use these drugs before a mammogram talk to their physicians first.
