COPD patients have higher risk of depression

Patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are more likely to become clinically depressed than healthy patients, and even other chronically ill people, a new study suggests. Researchers studied 999 patients with COPD, 978 with diabetes, and 2494 healthy individuals and found that the risk of being diagnosed with depression was significantly higher in COPD patients than in the other groups. Previous studies had suggested a link between the two conditions, but experts thought it may be that any illness increased the risk of the mood disorder. The study's authors say this research shows that it is COPD itself that increases the risk for depression.
