Depression boosts heart risks more than genes, environment

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found that a history of major depression boosts a person's risk of having heart disease more than any genetic or environmental risk factors. According to a university press release, researchers looked at data on more than 1,200 male twins who served in the military during Vietnam War, who answered questions about their health in 1992 and again in 2005. Investigators found that men who suffered from depression in 1992 were twice as likely to develop heart disease in the ensuing years, compared to men with no history of depression.  Read full story >
