Teens should be screened for depression: experts

Experts with the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force are urging primary care doctors to routinely screen their teen patients for depression. According to a new report from the task force, the benefits of screening kids 12 to 18 years old outweigh any risks if doctors can assure an accurate diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Experts say questionnaires can accurately identify teens prone to depression, and there's new evidence that therapy and/or some antidepressants can benefit them. But the report also stresses that careful monitoring is vital because there's "convincing evidence" that antidepressants can increase suicidal behavior in teens.
