Antidepressants may make tamoxifen less effective

Statistics show that many breast cancer survivors take antidepressants to help control the hot flashes brought on by the use of the drug tamoxifen, a drug that helps prevent breast cancer recurrence. But new research suggests these depression meds may actually keep tamoxifen from working as well as it should. Two new studies--one in the Netherlands and one in the United States--reached opposite conclusions about this issue this week, with one study showing SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac and and Paxil did not affect tamoxifen's effectiveness, and the other saying the drugs almost doubled a patient's risk of breast cancer recurrence.
