(Irish Times) UPDATED 2009-09-01
According to a new study, people who completely abstain from drinking alcohol are more at risk for depression and may lack certain social skills. For the study, researchers looked at the drinking habits of 38,000 people. They found that people who reported drinking no alcohol were more likely to report symptoms of depression than moderate drinkers. People who labeled themselves as “abstainers” had the highest risk of depression, even higher than those who drank too much alcohol. Scientists say people who abstain from alcohol may report more depression because they are more socially isolated, either because they have fewer friends or because they have personality traits associated with mental illness.
