Jury awards millions in Paxil-birth defect lawsuit

A Philadelphia jury has awarded $2.5 million to a family whose son was born with multiple heart defects after his mother took the antidepressant Paxil. The jury found drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline guilty of negligence, but it did not find the company guilty of outrageous conduct, and it rejected punitive damages. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings that Paxil may be associated with birth defects, and this verdict is the first of about 600 similar Paxil lawsuits filed across the United States.
