Army suicides set grim record

The number of suicides in the U.S. Army will hit a new high this year, with 140 suicides thus far. According to General Peter Chiarelli, the Army's vice chief of staff, this number is already equal to the number of suicides in 2008, and the figure is likely to climb to above last year's total. Chiarelli cautioned against assuming that stress during deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq were the cause for the suicides, since roughly a third of the soldiers who took their own lives had never been deployed abroad. The Army has recently admitted that one in every five lower rank officers suffers from a mental health condition such as depression.
