Body-Image Disorder Patients See Parts, But Not the Whole Face

People who are obsessed with one or more bodily features--typically on the face--often have a condition known as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This condition affects about one to two percent of the population, including some celebrities, and it can lead patients to seek multiple plastic surgeries in an effort to "fix" their appearance. Now scientists have found that people who suffer from BDD who look at pictures of themselves underuse parts of their brains used in seeing a face's overall appearance. This brain abnormality causes them to only see parts of the face, keeping them from clearly seeing how these parts fit into the whole.
