Researchers Find Clues to Anxiety Med Addiction

An international team of scientists have found that anxiety medications such as Xanex, Valium, and Ativan use the same "reward pathway" as heroin and marijuana, a finding that may explain why these drugs can become addictive. In a new study, researchers found that these meds, which are in a class known as benzodiazepine drugs, calm people because they affect a chemical in the brain in much the same way as opioids and cannabis. The scientists say their finding may one day help in the development of less addictive anxiety medications.
