Veterans Still Lack Adequate PTSD Treatment: Study

A new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress shows that U.S. veterans are still encountering barriers in getting treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study showed that almost 50,000 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were diagnosed with PTSD between 2002 and 2008. But researchers found that fewer than 10 percent of these veterans completed the recommended PTSD treatment program within the first four months of their diagnosis. This number only rose to about 30 percent at the end of one year. Investigators also found that men under age 25 and those living in rural areas were less likely to get the recommended PTSD treatment.
