Major Depression Common After Brain Injuries: Study

People who suffer a traumatic brain injury are eight times more likely to develop major depression, a new study has found. The study, published in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, also found that people who were younger, were dependent on alcohol, or who already suffered from depression had the highest risk of having major depression after this type of injury. Traumatic brain injuries can be caused by vehicle accidents or blunt traumas, and they are a "signature injury" among soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
