Study Finds Why Statins Can Cause Depression, Anxiety

Researchers say the results of a new study may explain why some people who take statins to lower their cholesterol experience feelings of anxiety and depression. In the animal study, scientists looked at the effects of the statin mevastatin and found that long-term use of the drug changed the structure and function of cell receptors for the brain chemical serotonin, which are known to influence behavior and mood. But the study also showed that adding cholesterol back into the cells treated with mevastatin restored them to normal.  Read full story >
