Ecstasy May Treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

According to a new small study, the so-called "club drug" Ecstasy may make psychotherapy more effective for people who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In the study, researchers followed the progress of 20 PTSD sufferers who underwent two eight-hour psychotherapy sessions scheduled about a month apart. Twelve of the patients took Ecstasy--also known as MDMA--while eight were given a placebo. At the end of the trial, psychologists found that more than 80 percent of the patients who received MDMA along with psychotherapy no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, compared with only 25 percent of the placebo group. But the scientists stress that their finding is very preliminary and that safety issues related to the drug must be addressed before any recommendations are made about its use.  Read full story >
