Culture Greatly Influences Suicidal Behavior: Study

A psychologist at Colorado State University has found that people's culture has a great impact on their suicidal behavior because it writes "scripts" for self-destructive behaviors that men and women then follow. For example, Sylvia S. Canetto notes that in industrialized nations, suicide tends to be regarded as a masculine act that is "unnatural" for women. This may explain why more women in the United States consider and attempt suicide but have a lower rate of death from it. Completed suicide attempts, Canetto says, are the masculine way to "do" suicide, causing women who kill themselves to be considered more deviant than men.
