Surgery Does Not Help People with Body Image Disorder

Results from a new study suggest that though one in five people who have the body image problem known as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) have cosmetic surgery, very few of them experience a reduction in the severity of their condition. People with BDD have a preoccupation with a slight or even imagined defect in their appearance. Their preoccupation is severe enough to cause them significant distress or trouble in their daily functioning and causes some of these patients to have surgery to "fix" these perceived defects. But in a recent study, researchers found that many people with BDD who have cosmetic surgery continue to have symptoms of the condition, and some cases even develop new preoccupations with their appearance.  Read full story >
