I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes four years ago! It was during my freshman year in high school, a scary time getting even scarier with news of having diabetes! The question to tell or not to tell is a tough one! Ginger wrote a blog last spring about telling a guy on an airplane about having diabetes and what an immediate nightmare it became!
But I think who we tell is most important! We all need support. It's eduction to them and can be a great outlet for us!!
Great Blog Matt.. and what awesome friends!

First of all, Matt, I'm glad you finally told your friends and have a great support system for when you need it!
But anyway, for readers out there, another thing is that it's important for your friends to know that you have diabetes in case you get sick or pass out and need their help! Imagine having to frantically explain why you desperately need sugar with a 40 bloodsugar to people who don't know what you're talking about.
Or if you decide to drink alcohol or use drugs (which I'm NOT recommending, but we're teenagers, and it happens...) it's important for your friends to know that you have diabetes for the same reasons as above.

... but remember to always ALWAYS have some form of sugar with you!
(my favorite thing to carry around is fruit snacks/gummies, specifically spiderman! they don't take up too much space, don't leak like juice boxes, and have about 100 calories and 15-20 grams of sugar depending on the brand)
