Broncos Quarterback Jay Cutler Overcoming Diabetes

By Laura Tuesday, October 07, 2008

Hey all!

I'm not much of a football fan, but I did catch a short pre-game segment on Bronco's quarterback Jay Cutler before last sunday's game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cutler is off to, what could be, his best NFL season ever (albeit, in his short 2 year career) despite being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April of this year.

Last year in his second season with the Broncos Cutler started losing weight and noticing intense fatigue following games. He didn't feel like himself. Team trainers urged him to go the the doctor. But not being one for doctor's visists, Cutler ignored the advice. It wasn't until his mandatory team physical that the team doctor became alarmed by his weight loss and ordered more tests.

After his diagnosis, Cutler admitted to being nervous about his status on the team. He wondered how the coaches would feel about his health condition and how it would effect his performance. But his teammates and coaches backed Jay 100% and he started his 3rd NFL season as the Broncos starting quarterback. He's also adjusting to life with diabetes. During the interview he took out his diabetes kit and showed the reporter how he tests his blood sugars.

Best of luck to Jay with the rest of the season! I'll be following to see how he does.
