"In the Mind of a Non-Diabetic"

              by: Mark Williams

I have to say being a non-diabetic can sometimes make you feel out of place, especially at a diabetic camp. Over the years I have committed myself to learning more and more about diabetes and how I can help the environment around me. The ADA winter weekend brought me back very found memories of my times at Camp Carefree and the winter weekends of the past few years that I have attended. The campers and staff that I have met through diabetes camps are like a second family to me. They have inspired me so much and I love each and every one of them. With the knowledge I have obtained through the camps, I now know what to do in almost any given situation. From glucogans to adjusting basil rates, I feel very confident in myself to know how to react in diabetic situatuions. Since my family has a history of diabetes, I am now more understanding to the population than ever. Now about winter weekend........

I can't say that I've ever gotten as sad as i did sunday february 15th at 2:00pm. Winter weekend had ended and it just made me realize how much everyone that attended means to me. Every single person there touched my heart in some way and I can't thank you enough for that. The pictures that I was in will be memories in my heart for a lifetime, in fact i changed my facebook profile picture as soon as those pics were posted. If there was any way that there could be a school for kids with diabetes, I would be the first person to apply for employment. This just shows how much I would do for any of those kids or staff. Special thanks to the staff this weekend, new and old, i love you all so very much!! To all of the campers that attended, past and present, thank you for all the memories we have made, I look forward to future years. Just know that you have touched my heart forever in a very special way, and that I would do anything for any of you. Just remember, take good care of your diabetes, test frequently, take your insulin, count your carbs, and live your life!! Much love to you all!!!!

Mark,

Awesome post :) I forget that you DON'T have diabetes while we're all there. You should get some kind of honorary diabetic badge. Winter Weekend this year was great, and I don't know what all of us 'betes folks did to get your attention and to get your friendship and support these past few years, but I appreciate how much you care! Diabetes or not, we all love you too!
